Is Your Puppy’s Biting Getting Worse?

Why is my puppy biting so much?
Puppies bite frequently due to teething, excitement, and learning how to interact. Biting often increases when responses are inconsistent or accidentally rewarding, which teaches the puppy that biting is effective and leads to attention or play.
You expected some nipping — but now:
It’s harder
More frequent
Feels out of control
This is one of the most stressful stages of raising a puppy.
Why Puppy Biting Escalates
Of course puppy biting IS normal because new teeth hurt! However biting can become inappropriate & at Step 2 New Puppy Basics almost 100% of my puppy parents are struggling to some degree with this.
Common reasons include:
Overstimulation
Lack of clear boundaries
Inconsistent responses
Accidental reinforcement
👉 And yes — owners often make it worse without realising.
The Turning Point Most Owners Miss
There’s a stage where biting shifts from:
Playful → Habitual
If this isn’t handled correctly, your puppy learns:👉 biting = an effective tool in certain situations e.g. to gain attention/start or stop an interaction
Why “Standard Advice” Often Fails
You’ve probably tried:
Saying “no”/yelping/ouch
Walking away
Giving toys instead
These can work — but only if applied correctly and at the right time
Otherwise, they:
Confuse your puppy
Reinforce the behaviour
Make it more persistent
This Is Where It Becomes a Bigger Problem
Left unchecked:
Biting can continue into adolescence which is a bigger problem with bigger teeth!
It becomes harder to control
It affects confidence and trust
