Why Your Puppy Won’t Settle in the House (And What It Means)

❓ Why won’t my puppy settle down?

Puppies often struggle to settle due to overstimulation, overtiredness, or lack of structure. Without learning how to relax, they can remain active and restless, especially if their routine doesn’t include enough calm or downtime.

Does Your Puppy Never Switch Off?

If your puppy:

  • Is constantly moving

  • Struggles to relax

  • Gets more hyper as the day goes on

…it can feel exhausting.

Why Puppies Struggle to Settle

This isn’t just “high energy.”

Often it’s because your puppy:

  • Doesn’t know how to relax

  • Is overtired (not under-exercised)

  • Is constantly stimulated

👉 And this is where many owners get it wrong. I totally understand btw how draining this can be & I this is something I help with so many times during Step 2 New Puppy Basics

The Common Mistake

When puppies seem hyper, owners often:

  • Increase exercise

  • Add more play

  • Try to “tire them out”

But this can actually:👉 make the behaviour worse over time - yes it IS true

What’s Really Going On

An unsettled puppy is usually:

  • Stuck in a cycle of stimulation

  • Lacking structure around rest

  • Not learning calm behaviour

Why It Matters

If this continues:

  • Your puppy struggles with self-control which is a skill your puppy must learn

  • Behaviour problems increase

  • Calm behaviour never develops properly & you end up being absolutely exhausted!!
