Why Your Puppy Cries at Night (And Why It’s Not What You Think)

❓ Why is my puppy crying at night?

Puppies cry at night because they are adjusting to a new environment, feeling unsettled, or not yet able to settle independently. This behaviour is common in young puppies and often relates to changes in routine and separation from familiar surroundings.

Puppy Crying at Night?

This is one of the hardest parts of bringing a puppy home.

You finally go to bed… and the crying starts. For my new puppy owners, I know this is super stressful & at Step 2 New Puppy Basics we chat about this a lot.

Why Puppies Cry at Night

It’s not just “attention seeking.”

Your puppy may be:

  • Adjusting to a new environment

  • Experiencing separation stress

  • Unsure how to settle alone

The Common Advice (And Why It Backfires)

You’ll hear things like:

  • “Ignore it”

  • “Let them cry it out”

  • “They’ll learn eventually”

But this doesn’t always work — and can sometimes:

  • Increase anxiety

  • Make settling harder

  • Prolong the problem

The Real Problem

Night crying is usually a sign that:👉 your puppy hasn’t learned how to settle independently yet

And that’s something that needs to be taught properly

Why Some Puppies Improve — and Others Don’t

It depends on:

  • How daytime routines are structured

  • Sleep environment

  • Early responses to crying
