❓ Is a Cockapoo a good first dog?
A Cockapoo can be a good first dog due to its friendly nature and intelligence. However, they can be high energy and require consistent training, meaning they are not always as easy to manage as many first-time owners expect.
Thinking About Getting a Cockapoo?
Cockapoos are one of the most popular dogs in the UK right now.
They’re often described as:
Friendly
Intelligent
Great for families
Easy for first-time owners
But is that really the full picture?
Why Cockapoos Are So Popular
Cockapoos (a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and Poodle) are known for:
Their affectionate nature - they do in general have a great temperament
Their sociability
Their “teddy bear” appearance
👉 It’s easy to see why so many people choose them as a first dog....they're super cute!
The Pros of a Cockapoo as a First Dog
✔ Friendly and Social
Cockapoos are typically:
People-oriented
Good with families
Eager to interact
✔ Intelligent
They often:
Learn quickly
Pick up training faster than some breeds - I do find them especially easy to train in most cases
✔ Adaptable
Many Cockapoos can:
Fit into different lifestyles
Live in a range of environments
⚠️ The Cons Most People Don’t Expect
This is where things often surprise first-time owners.
✖ High Energy Levels
Cockapoos are not “low maintenance.”
They often need:
Regular exercise (remember what breeds they're crossed with after all!)
Mental stimulation
Ongoing engagement
✖ Can Be Easily Overstimulated
Without the right structure, they may:
Become hyper
Struggle to settle
Develop excitable behaviours
✖ Prone to Behaviour Issues if Mismanaged
Common problems I particularly find include:
Pulling on the lead
Jumping up
Poor recall
Difficulty settling
👉 Especially if early training isn’t structured properly
✖ Not Always as “Easy” as Expected
Many first-time owners assume:👉 Cockapoo = easy dog
But in reality:👉 they still require consistent training and guidance
Why Some Owners Struggle With Cockapoos
It’s usually as ever:
Mismatch between expectations and reality
Lack of early structure
Not understanding how their behaviour develops
So… Are Cockapoos Good for First-Time Owners?
They can be — but only if:
You understand what they need
You’re prepared for the work involved
You build the right structure early on
The Reality
Cockapoos are:✔ Friendly and intelligent❗ But also active and easily excitable
👉 Which means they’re not automatically “easy”
